Education & Training at Long Reef is led by Andrew Robson, 2004 NSW Training Officer of the year. The Education & Training program provides patrolling members with the knowledge they need to create a professional water safety / rescue service. Long Reef also focuses on retaining proficiencies to ensure skills and abilities remain current and relevant.
The 2005/2006 season saw about 690 awards received by our members and the 2004/2005 season saw over 635 awards received supporting that training and education is an area of great importance for Long Reef members
To provide a safe beach and aquatic environment it is required that every patrol has a proficient HBI, at least 1 IRB Driver and 1 IRB Crewman, 1 ARC holder and a minimum of 4 Bronze Medallion holders.
As of August 1st there has been significant changes to the way resuscitation needs to be performed and taught. As per the SLSA Circular dated April 2006:
The National Board of Lifesaving has recently adopted the new Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) guidelines for resuscitation. Adopting the new guidelines will see the largest change in resuscitation in the last two decades and will require major change within the organisation

The Bronze Medallion is the minimum requirement for a surf life saver. You must be over the age of 15 to train for your Bronze and demonstrate proficiency in occupational health & safety; surf and environmental conditions, identify hazards, surf skills, patient management and resuscitation techniques and communication skills. Long Reef will be running 2 courses this season. The first course will start beginning to mid October, the second course will commence in February 07. All those interested in training for their Certificate II must be a financial member of Long Reef SLSC. The courses run for approx. 6-8 weeks depending on prior knowledge. Training is normally held every Wednesday from 6.30-8.30pm in the club house and every Sunday from 11-1pm on the beach or in the club house if weather does not permit for beach training

Season 2004 - 05 saw the introduction of the requirement to have an ARC holder on every patrol. To train for the ARC award a candidate must be a minimum of 15 years old and demonstrate proficient knowledge of basic resuscitation, perform 1 and 2 person patient assessment and EAR / CPR for an adults, children and infant, perform oxygen aided resuscitation technique and demonstrate and perform oxygen therapy using an airbag resuscitator unit. In addition candidates must demonstrate theoretical and practical knowledge of spinal injuries and stiff neck collars. Find out more.
You must be over the age of 17 to train for IRB Driver and 16 to train for your IRB Crewman. Candidates must be able to demonstrate pre and post operation procedures of an IRB; Iaunch and drive / crew an IRB in a safe manner with potential hazards and environment conditions including roll over prevention and procedure; IRB rescue procedures.
