Education and Training

Why is Education & Training important?

The Education & Training program provides patrolling members with the knowledge they need to create a professional water safety / rescue service. Long Reef also focuses on retaining proficiencies to ensure skills and abilities remain current and relevant.

  

To provide a safe beach and aquatic environment it is required that every patrol has a proficient HBI, at least 1 IRB Driver and 1 IRB Crewman, 1 ARC holder and a minimum of 4 Bronze Medallion holders.

  

Public Safety Aquatic Rescue (Bronze Medallion)

The Bronze Medallion is the minimum requirement for a surf life saver. You must be over the age of 15 to train for your Bronze and demonstrate proficiency in occupational health & safety; surf and environmental conditions; identify hazards; surf skills; patient management; resuscitation techniques and communication skills.

  

The Bronze Medallion course is run at the Club House several times each season and goes for 6-8 weeks depending on prior knowledge. All those interested in training for their Certificate II must be a financial member of Long Reef SLSC. Click Here for course details.

  

Advanced Resuscitation Certificate - ARC

There must be an Advanced Resuscitation Certificate (ARC) holder on every patrol. To train for the ARC award a candidate must be a minimum of 15 years old and demonstrate proficient knowledge of basic resuscitation, perform 1 and 2 person patient assessment and EAR / CPR for an adults, children and infant, perform oxygen aided resuscitation technique and demonstrate and perform oxygen therapy using an airbag resuscitator unit. IRB Driver & Crewman

You must be over the age of 17 to train for IRB Driver and 16 to train for your IRB Crewman. Candidates must be able to demonstrate pre and post operation procedures of an IRB; Iaunch and drive / crew an IRB in a safe manner with potential hazards and environment conditions including roll over prevention and procedure; IRB rescue procedures.
