This is a fitting reward and recognition for the fantastic contributions Seamus has made to the club this year. 60th Birthday Dinner Report

Report by Seamus Redmond - Director of Sponsorship & Marketing.

It had to be a special night for our 60th Birthday Celebration, and we were not disappointed!

200 guests arrived to celebrate the event held in the Gallery room of the DYRSL which had the dress theme of 60’s fashion, and this lead to a wide interpretation of just what that meant. The evening got off to a formal start with Dave MacIntosh leading in the colour party of Life Members, who were acknowledged individually by the MC on the night Scott McLachlan. This was followed by a minute’s silence for the passing of former members, then a welcoming speech from our president Doug Lucas.

A special presentation was made to Nathan Gibson (club member and IRB  boat captain) by the NSW Ambulance service for a CPR he carried out while at work and this was duly acknowledged by all the guests. We then had an on-stage discussion lead by Giff Brown, John Freedman and Tim Bagot who reflected on the 60 years of Long Reef Surf Club’s existence, and called on several Old Boys to join in the talk, including Brian Saint (one of our founding members from 1950.) This was a wonderful opportunity for all to listen to how the club’s formation and  culture was established through the efforts of many dedicated individuals.

Following this another very important act of thanks and respect was carried out by honouring 15 people voted by the club committee to be influential figures through the six decades the club has been in existence. This ranged from Giff Brown in the 50’s to Stella Watson of the current decade, and some very dedicated people, in between them. Each nominee was awarded a specially engraved pen to mark the occasion.

Our guest speaker for the evening was our Club Patron, The Honourable Bronwyn Bishop MP, who gave a wonderful speech to the gathering on the importance of club life with particular mention to our younger members, as to the value of belonging to an extended family such as Long Reef.  She extolled the virtues and importance of Surf Life Saving and the role it plays in our community, and encouraged us all to continue on with its work.  She wished us well in our

ongoing challenge to resolve our new club building with Warringah Council and offered encouragement to see it through.

After all that, it was time for some food, and entertainment by our invited band BackBeat, who performed some memorable songs from the 60’s, in line with the theme of the evening.  We also watched two DVDs made especially for the event, one by Mal McCormick on “The Vets” boat crew journey through the 2010 season from the State Championship and eventually winning the National title in Kurrawa, in enormous swells, leading to lots of photo shots of spills and thrills.  The second DVD was created by Bernadette McAlinden which reflected on the Club’s history and the fun times enjoyed during that time.  It contained many images previously unknown to the majority of the guests, and was a thrill to sit and enjoy such rich and colourful images.

Now the evening was well and truly underway, and the time-honoured tradition of Club awards was performed.  Scott, Club President Doug Lucas, Club Captain Shane Stewart, and Dave MacIntosh performed the honours.  The results of those awards are published separately within this annual report, but a heartfelt thanks was expressed to all nominees and eventual winners. It was also at this stage that acknowledgement of the efforts made by Richard Van Weeren and Seamus Redmond to organise the evening was recognised.

Then came a very special part of the programme when Doug Lucas  presented what was billed as “The Club Future” through a powerpoint presentation entitled “Our Journey to Redevelop”.  He warned that there are still many hurdles to overcome before we potentially do any form of redevelopment but with a renewed effort by our old boys as well as current members it was all possible.

Doug received a well-earned rousing reception from the room and excitement filled the air with the possibilities before us.  This was the perfect time then to bring in our Birthday cakes and have the cutting of the cakes performed by Brian Saint and Georgia Hardcastle, representing the past and the future of Long Reef.

All that was left to do was to have the band return to stage and for the guests to relax and dance the rest of the night away which they did with great aplomb and variety of dance skills. It truly was a magnificent occasion and a night to remember with many already talking about the 70th celebration! Bring it on!

Perfect conditions for 'Tour of Buoys' 334 register, results & photo gallery.

Today (11/4/2010) was near perfect conditions for ocean swimming and despite being in the middle of the Easter school holidays 334 swimmers aged from 16 through to 82 registering for the race. Upon arriving at Long Reef beach competitors were faced with brilliant swimming conditions. 22 degrees water temperature, 28 degrees on the beach, a very slight north, north west breeze and flat as a tack on the wave front. To make things even more special the tide was falling allowing swimmers to swim over the Long Reef beach aquatic marine park allowing swimmers to enjoy the wonders of the reef including coral and hundreds of different fish.

A full race report including the results will be posted on the Oceanswims website in the coming days so stay tuned. We will also upload a number of photographs showing todays action. For those that hung around for the presentation we played a few games of heads and tails and gave away a total of 5 x 56 litre eskys worth around $300 each thanks to Winning Appliances not to mention a number of other prizes.

We hope that all who swam today enjoyed their experience at Longy and we look on seeing you all back next year for the 'Tour of Buoys' to be held on the last weekend of February, 2011. Until then enjoy your swimming and keep smiling.

Those interested in obtaining a race certificate from today's Tour of Buoy's ocean swim please contact President@longreef.com and I will ensure that one is posted to your nominated address.

Low-life vandals rob and wreck Long Reef lifesavers

Low-life vandals rob and wreck Long Reef lifesavers

THOUGHTLESS vandals broke into Long Reef SLSC on Wednesday night and destroyed vital equipment, leaving a $15,000 damage bill and putting the community’s safety at risk.

Club president Doug Lucas said lifesavers returned to the club on Thursday morning to find thieves had broken into the building, removing an inflatable rescue boat and trailer, which were eventually abandoned in the surf.

“They’ve taken the IRB out into the ocean and ridden that around in the dark,” Mr Lucas said yesterday.

“This morning, the IRB was bobbing up and down in the ocean and we managed to get that back, but the engine had been out in the water for hours and it’s totally ruined.”

Mr Lucas said one wheel of the trailer was still visible when police arrived in the early morning, however they had no way of recovering the trailer before it disappeared completely.

He said the thieves had also ransacked the inside of the clubhouse, trying unsuccessfully to steal a quad bike, with the total damage bill for the break-in likely to be over $15,000.

Until the trailer and motor were replaced, Mr Lucas added, the volunteer lifesavers would find it difficult to properly protect beach goers.

Message to Club Members

Entry to the club was gained by forcing two roller shutter doors at the side of the club. Fortunately for the club damage could have been significantly worse with few items actually stolen. This is an excellent reminder for club members to ensure the club is locked up correctly including all internal locks on rescue equipment and doors. Fortunately thieves were unable to remove the Rhino other than damaging the vehicles ignition. For the next few weeks patrols will be required to carry all rescue equipment including the IRB and engine on and off the beach until we can get a new ignition for the Rhino and a replacement IRB trailer. Such acts of vandalism are nothing more than a hurdle. Although we wont be able to perform after hours rescue operations until the Rhino is fixed this senseless act will have no affect on our patrols for the remainder of the season. It will be business as usual this weekend for community and club members to enjoy. Any information relating to those responsible for this mindless act please contact President@longreef.com or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

All NSW beaches have been closed and people hoping to view tsunami conditions have been ushered off the sand.

Surf Life Saving NSW has ordered all beaches closed from 8am (AEDT) on Sunday after an 8.8 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of central Chile about 5.43pm (AEDT) on Saturday.

Tsunami shockwaves have already struck islands in French Polynesia, bringing waves up to 4m high and minor damage but no injuries. The Joint Australian Tsunami Warning Centre has issued tsunami warnings for all of the NSW coast from 8.45am (AEDT) on Sunday.

Dangerous waves, strong ocean currents and foreshore flooding may hit coastal areas stretching south from Rockhampton, in Queensland, to Victoria and Tasmania.

Beachgoers attended NSW beaches on Sunday morning until they were ushered out of the water and off the beach by surf life savers. "We've issued to all of our NSW clubs a directive to close the beaches until further notice," a SLS NSW spokeswoman told AAP.

All nipper training at NSW beaches has been cancelled. Crowds have amassed just back from the sand with hopes of witnessing any potential tsunami effects.

POTY FlavouriteLifesavers squareFor the last part of the 2009-10 season we have decided to spice up patrols- putting up the opportunity for a patrol to win a massive $1500 for the winning Long Reef SLSC Patrol of the Year.

It's that time of year again, where we start picking up our game, ironing our uniforms and tying our caps with perfect bows to make top impressions to win the club's pretigious Patrol of the Year award.

Last year's winners, Patrol 4, as led by Patrol Captain Craig Phillips have said it's going to be difficult to win the award two years in a row. It's going to be anyobd'y's game this year, every patrol has an equal chance and everyone is hungrier than ever to win!

With $1500 in the pipe-line for a patrol to win and spend it accordingly as noted in the Assessment Sheet there's bound to be super strong competition between patrols. The assessment guides have been put into place, where points can officially begin to be accumulated on 20 February 2010 and until the end of the patrol season.

The assessment is very simple, patrols gain points for the volunteer efforts they already do. The assessment is combined with an internal patrol assessment identical to the branch patrol assessment marking sheet where each patrol will be assessed once internally. There is no limit to how many points a patrol can accumulate, so its really up to how the patrol works out their plan of attack to take out the winning position.

The aim of the Patrol of the Year award is to develop capable patrol tems, create a sense of accomplishment and recognition to patrol members, generate a sense of responsibility and purpose, ensure a healthy lifestyle for patrollers, establish a sense of pride & promote positive social relationships.

President's Christmas Message.

WorldClient

Another year has almost come to an end. Much will be said in the years to come about the past decade that has seen both the club and SLSA organisation go through tremendous change.

I thank each of our members both big and small for their massive contributions they have made to our club to ensure our success during these years and in particular 2009. Our Management Board has worked endlessly to ensure the club has been smoothly run and this task is no mean feat. I  thank each of you for your dedication and commitment assisting in club operations. We have some fabulous people in our club and I have been again honored to be our clubs President during this year. I do hope that each of you have sincerely enjoyed your involvement with the club as that is what it is all about having 'Serious fun'.

As usual our club will have to perform a community service over the Christmas and New Years period, to ensure that our beach users can safely enjoy themselves with their family and friends. For those members volunteering I thank you.

Lastly I take this opportunity to wish you and your family a safe and happy festive season and look forward to seeing you all in 2010 for the beginning of what will I am sure be another successful decade for all involved with Long Reef SLSC.

Doug Lucas,

President.

Members of Long Reef SLSC will be participating in the 2010 George Bass Marathon. Widely regarded as the longest and toughest surf boat race in the world, eight of Longy's own surf lifesaving boaties and two sweeps with their support crew will compete in the 190km offshore surfboat marathon between 3-9 January 2010.

The crew; consisting of Andrew Dummett, Chris Hipsley, Matt Russell-Jones, Stuart Garret, Angus Vowell, Adam L'Green, Kurt Uebergang and Graeme Burns, with their coaches/sweeps Bruce Gaal, Rob Pearson, Will Hardcastle, Alice Clarke, Dave Sams and Ross Jenkins, have been in solid training over the past 3 months ahead of the big event. Apart from physical demands where some legs reach up to 38kms of rowing a day, the crew have been mastering mid-cean transitions and rowing in all type of surf conditions in preparation.

Longy's evergreen Vets crew were amongst the few crews to compete in the first George Bass Marathon 35 years ago in 1975 and the current crop of surf boat rowers are looking forward to emulating thier achievements and representing the club once again in this historical event.

The boat crews, and fellow supporters will be holding a fundraiser to launch the start of their journey with an event on Sunday 20 December from 11am and running to 4pm at Longy Clubhouse. There will be all round festivities with activities, food and drink for all to enjoy. The support is welcome and help show your support for the crew competing in the 2010 George Bass Marathon.
