2012 - 'Tour of Buoys' Sunday 26th February, 2012

Great news for recidivist ocean swimmers - the Olympus Tough fine ocean swimmers series returns for another season this year.  What's even better is that the Long Reef SLSC Tour of Buoys swim to be held on Sunday 26th February, 2012 is now apart of the series. Entries will soon be open at www.oceanswims.com

Long Reef will again host a 1km and 2km swim with completion certificates for all swimmers, electronic timing and loads of lucky door prizes. The Tour of Buoys is a fun and friendly swim and yes we have a new PA system and observation area over the beach which should make announcements much easier. This year we also have a 200 metre DASH FOR CASH straight in from the back of the break and across a finish line with random prizes as well as a winning male and female category.

2. Black Head, lower north coast, Jan 2
3. Malabar, eastern suburbs, Feb 19
4. Long Reef, northern beaches, Feb 26
   
5. Freshwater, northern beaches, Mar 4
6. Stanwell Park, south, Apr 1
7. Bondi, eastern suburbs, Apr 9

Great prizes, too, including -

• A trip to swim the Dardanelles, from Europe to Asia, in August 2012;
• A trip to Vanuatu to take part in the Vanuatu Open Water Swim and the Espiritu Santo-Aore Swim in June 2012;
• A trip to Fiji to take part in the Mana Fiji Ocean Swim in September 2012;
• An Olympus E-P3 camera to the winner;
  
• Olympus cameras to be given away at each participating event; and
• View Swim gear packs, also to be given away at each participating event.

The series will use the handicap system again, with each swimmer's time being weighted for the age and sex, to produced handicap results. This means all swimmers can compare themselves validly with all other swimmers.

2011 - 'Tour of Buoys' Sunday 27th February, 2011.

This year Long Reef SLSC introduced a number of changes based on previous competitor feedback. Such changes we believed really enhanced the competitors swimming enjoyment and included:

• 1km and 2km swim,
• Electronic timing,
• 6 x Large new 1.5 metre swim buoys,
• Down-loadable certificates for all competitors,
• Greater competitor categories and
• Reduction in competitor age for 1km swim.

Numbers for the 2011 were significantly up based on previous years with 171 swimmers doing the 1km course and 374 doing the 2km bring the total number of swimmers to 545 for the day.

As organises this potentially means that we are at least doing a few things right. This being said we are always looking at ways to improve and therefore value competitor feedback so if you have suggestions or comments on the swim please let us know. (Yes we have already ordered a new PA)

11th April, 2010 - Perfect conditions for 'Tour of Buoys' Ocean Swim 2010 - 334 register for the big race!

Today (11/4/2010) was near perfect conditions for ocean swimming and despite being in the middle of the Easter school holidays 334 swimmers aged from 16 through to 82 registering for the race. Upon arriving at Long Reef beach competitors were faced with brilliant swimming conditions. 22 degrees water temperature, 28 degrees on the beach, a very slight north, north west breeze and flat as a tack on the wave front. To make things even more special the tide was falling allowing swimmers to swim over the Long Reef beach aquatic marine park allowing swimmers to enjoy the wonders of the reef including coral and hundreds of different fish.

A full race report including the results will be posted on the Oceanswims website in the coming days so stay tuned. We will also upload a number of photographs showing todays action. For those that hung around for the presentation we played a few games of heads and tails and gave away a total of 5 x 56 litre eskys worth around $300 each thanks to Winning Appliances not to mention a number of other prizes.

We hope that all who swam today enjoyed their experience at Longy and we look on seeing you all back next year for the 'Tour of Buoys' to be held on the last weekend of February, 2011. Until then enjoy your swimming and keep smiling.
