What's Happening
Club 60th Birthday Dinner - Saturday 5th June, 2010
On behalf of Long Reef SLSC Board of Management and club members it is with great pleasure that I invite all current and former members of Long Reef SLSC to join us to help celebrate the clubs 60th birthday celebrations. A lot has happened in the past 60 years and this evening will be an opportunity to reflect and pay tribute to those members that have contributed so much to the club and our community. This really will be a special occasion. We have a few special guests who will speak throughout the evening about the clubs past. I will then share some exciting news about where Long Reef SLSC will be in the near future.
So organise your tables now and make sure you dont miss what will be a historic evening in the clubs history.
SLS Memorabilia. Donations sought.
We are also calling for any historic SLS or Long Reef memorabilia that people might have at home and are prepared to loan or donate to the club. We would like to start collecting items for a museum display. Items can include old patrol uniforms, certificates, awards, club medals, photographs, SLS equipment, newspaper clippings, basically anything from the past. Should you have any such items stored away please contact me on president@longreef.com and I will be more than happy to collect them

Paddle for Bowel Cancer

President Doug Lucas is always looking for a challenge and this time he has joined Pete Wells, Channel 7’s Sydney Weekender presenter and member of Narrabeen SLSC doing a 320km paddle in an attempt to raise money for Bowel Cancer research and awareness. The Sydney Northern Beaches Branch had 15541 members in season 2008/09. Based on the National averages of those who will be affected by the disease 1295 members will be diagnosed with Bowel Cancer during their life. This is the combined membership of North Palm Beach, Bungan Beach, Narrabeen Beach, South Narrabeen and Whale Beach. Fortunately through early detection and screening this disease can be treated.

Round 2 Fenn Cup - Perfect Down wind conditions predicted!
The line up
This weekend will be the best field ever assembled in Australian waters made up entirely of the top Aussie paddlers? You be the judge.
Fenn Cup 1 saw what at that time was regarded as the best ever field. Take all the guys from that race and add the following.
Dave Kissane, Tate Smith, Kurt “Sun Blocker Tutt, Matty Rees, Kirk Jarrott, Dean Mercer a host of unknown Viccos making the trip North and a bunch of the Queenslanders who are keen also to make their mark in ocean racing.
Last race saw a tight battle between Jeremy Cotter, Tim Jacobs and Shannon Eckstein. These three are primed to go head to head to head again. An unfortunate visit to rock shelf by Tony Shumacher last race may have also seen him mixing it with the trio.
A betting man would put his money on one of these four but when you look at the rest of the lineup it makes the decision a difficult one.
With the predicted strong downwind you can be sure that the older brigade will make their presence felt at the front. Light tailwinds at last week’s ocean series event saw some of those guys move a little closer to the front. Even so the race was clearly Tim’s with Murray (now getting fitter) very close behind.
The Cotter/Jacobs battle this weekend has got everyone talking. These two are the standouts but don’t be surprised if any of the above mentioned sneak through for a major upset.

Long Reef SLSC dives into Boardies Day
Boardies Day is an opportunity for all Australians to wear their board shorts or other beach-themed attire to work and make a gold coin donation to help our volunteer surf lifesavers. This year, Boardies Day will be held on 27 November 2009. Long Reef Surf Life Saving Club will be a beneficiary of the fundraising day, and we are asking for your support!
To find out more information on Boardies Day and how you can help, visit the 'Club Members' page on the website.

Fellow Lifesaver, Peter Wells 'Everest 2010' Expedition.

The challenge of climbing Everest intrigues me. I’ve always been in awe of the mountain. Over the years I’ve trekked to its Base Camp, and climbed its surrounding 6,000m metre peaks for a better view of it. The best view I’ve had was from 8,201m from the summit of Cho Oyu. The month of climbing Cho Oyu was worth the 1-minute majestic view of the highest peak on Earth - before the clouds blew in and it was gone – just like that! Of all my travel experiences this rates as one of the best. And now, to actually step foot onto Everest, to climb above the Khumbu Icefall, look up to the Western Cmn and high camps, is a dream come true for me - but I approach it with every respect for the mountain.
Supporting Bowel Cancer Australia through the climb will raise awareness of the disease and get people thinking and acting on it. I so often meet people who have been personally affected by it. I’d also like to think the expedition might inspire people to bring those “some-day dreams to the present.
How can you get behind this expedition?
South African Ronnie Muhl one of the worlds best known mountaineers is the Australian Team expedition leader and is out from South Africa in November, speaking at engagements throughout Sydney for his 2-week stay. To assist in raising funds for the expediction and Bowel Caner Ronnie is putting on a number of talks specifically for Surf Life Saving Clubs, their family and friends. Col Crawford as come on board and will provide the venue specially for surf club members to attend! There’ll be refreshments available on the night, as well as door prizes. It’ll be loads of fun and very inspirational.
Col Crawford Motors in Brookvale is providing their fully kitted out showroom for the presentation on 12 November. The tickets are $29 a head, and can be purchased on the website.
Go to www.everest2010.com.au and click on the Events tab.
This is a fantastic cause and Long Reef SLSC members are strongly encouraged to support this evening as it will be an incredibly inspirational presentation and one not to miss.
Fenn Cup Round 1 huge success
Over the weekend on Saturday 26 September the club held the first round of the 2009 Fenn Cup Ocean Paddling Series.
Tricky conditions were provided for all those involved, on and off the beach, but nevertheless the day ended a huge success. The paddling field was filled with star-studded world class athletes including Hayley Bate-up, Shannon Eckstein, Jeremy Cotter, Ky Hurst and Nathan Smith to name just a few. Jeremy Cotter took out Round 1 of the series with a tight sprint to the finish and Hayley Bate-up winning the females category.
Members of the club did outstanding jobs providing one the most professional Water Safety jobs under tough 25-30 knot winds. The admin team did fantastic work getting registration and entries coordinated smoothly and had results posted live onto websites by 9:00pm on Saturday night.
Round 2 of the series will be held on the Saturday 31 October- for all those who missed the action make sure you keep this date free to get involved!

Going for Gold!
During the winter months two of our very own members; Monique Selosse and Stella Watson, gained their Gold Medallion qualifications. Monique gained hers in July whilst Stella completed hers at the start of 2009 with the Australian Lifeguard Service (ALS) where she worked in Ballina with the Lifeguards during her Uni' break. The Gold Medallion (the Gold) is one of the toughtest and most enduring awards possible to any sur lifesaver in Australia. The Gold is similar to the qualifications the Lifeguards gain to be employed by Warringah Council. Both the girls were required to train vigorously, with the test primarily aimed at their physical capabilities. They accomplished several days a weeks of swim, run and endurance training to be able to undertake the exam.
Congratulations to both the girls who no doubt have already shown their professionalism and capabilities- but now have the qualification to prove it!

New Bathrooms
Over the winter Long Reef was a lucky receipient of the Federal Government's and Surf Life Saving Australia's EcoSurf Water Savings Grant. With an extra $10 600.00 from the grant, the club put the money to use developing environmentally friendly bathrooms.
The redevelopment included 4 x new toilets, 10 x shower outlets, taps and other fittings.
With thanks to Collaroy Paint and Hardware donating enough paint to repaint the bathrooms, a few club members put in the hard yards of painting over 3-4 days, successfully completing the redvelopment on Saturday 29 August.
As well as the bathroom the club also re-painted parts of the club hall, cleaned inside and out and as well as laying new pavers and regrasssing the courtyard.
A special thanks to Seamus Redmond, Richard van Weeren and all the other members who helped and picked up a brush for a few hours.

Long Reef Nippers go SunSafe
Long Reef recently appeared in the Manly Daily for its innitiative in protecting our kids from the dangers of the sun. The club has this season introduced Sun Saftey hats for all Nippers, providing safety to the kids whilst out in the sun at the most critical time of the day. The club is leading the way in SunSafe develop and hopes that other clubs and organisation will soon be able to follow suit and recognise the importance of protecting Nippers from the sun.The club would like to thank all those member invovled who helped make this innitiative happen over winter, and especially the member who assited through their family trust.
